The Important Ways the CDC Foundation Complements the Work of the CDC

The CDC Foundation is an independent nonprofit and the sole entity created by Congress to mobilize philanthropic and private sector resources to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s critical health protection work. As such, they’ve been in the news and busier than ever this past year. And here to talk about that work and what’s coming next, it’s a pleasure to have with us, Dr. Judith Monroe, the president and CEO of the CDC Foundation.

There is nothing on this show I enjoy doing more than taking an organization that we are all so familiar with, but don’t really fully understand or appreciate,  and learn about their challenges, all that they actually do, and how they go about doing it. And there may be no finer example of that than the American Red Cross. And it’s a great pleasure to have with us this evening their president and chief executive officer, Gail McGovern.

I consider it to have been a real accomplishment to have gotten my next guest to come in today to sit down with me for an interview because, more often than not, you’ll find her walking – walking alone, walking with a group of friends, and now walking with nearly 150,000 other black women in an extraordinary grassroots movement known as GirlTrek. She is Morgan Dixon, the Co-founder and CEO of GirlTrek.

American lives are shorter on average than those in other wealthy nations, and the gap is growing ever wider according to the latest data released by the Center for Disease Control. In fact, it appears that in 2017, US life expectancy will drop for a third year in a row, an event that hasn’t occurred in over a hundred years. As Americans, we are not faring well. But there’s a young organization that is dedicated to advancing the mental, social, and spiritual health of the nation. It’s called Well Being Trust, and it’s a pleasure to have with us their Chief Executive Officer, Tyler Norris. Good evening, Tyler, and welcome to The Business of Giving.
